Greetings from Istanbul! If you follow me on Instagram you would have seen the sensational view from my window right now. I’ve finished the latest round of edits to my novel, and we’re about to start our nerdy trip around Turkey.

News & Reviews has gained a significant number of new subscribers since my piece about Ellery was published by The Monthly a few days ago. Welcome! If you’re here off the back of that then your timing is good because I’m talking about how I did that investigation in my editor’s letter here. But also you should know that Style and Nerd special editions are paywalled. Why? I pay the people who write for me and these are ad-free spaces. Talent working free of compromise is a rare and beautiful thing in today’s media environment. Regular editions like last week’s and next week’s are all me and all free. If you appreciate the work I did in The Monthly and have cash to spare, please consider donating a subscription to someone who can’t afford it.

Okay! Here’s what we’ve got for you in Style this month:

  • My editor’s letter is the 2,500-word opinion and personal side of the straight-up reporting I did on Ellery for The Monthly—the story behind the story and what’s next

  • Jordy has interviewed and photographed Tarek Kourhani who designed countless identical puffy-sleeved linen dresses for other brands before founding super cool and gender-free KOURH

  • Three recommendations for things you’ll want to buy that aren’t brand new

  • What I’ve bought and packed for this trip, including my legit repeat beauty purchases

  • My personal shopping list if I had $100, $1,000, and $10,000

Unfortunately no report card from Elfy this month, as she’s over at her big new job meeting celebrities and killing it and we aren’t jealous at all. Also a little pause in giveaways just because I’m on the road for six weeks total. They’ll be back and bigger than ever in May, I promise!

An editor’s letter: the story behind the story about Ellery

It has always been easier to tear something down than build something up. It has always been easier to criticise than to create. When a journalist decides to go after a story that has the potential to do some kind of reputational damage they have to be sure it’s for the right reasons. Sloppy reporting can hurt, but rigorous reporting can hurt even more.
