Maritza! hiking the INCA until 6 months pregnant, with ROCKs cruelly places in her bag? she is exceptional. i nearly passed out on that hike from altitude sickness, not pregnant, at the wee age of 22?!? probably my fittest i'd ever been too! gosh i'd love to do it again with a whole team of women telling their stories. what an inspiring update. sad i missed the genre report live!
Yes! I know it might be confirmation bias, but I see and hear so much jaded and cynical coverage of tourism these days. I've just finished the trip and I am so full of optimism now.
Love this from Intrepid! When I went to Vietnam a few years ago I'd been given a recommendation from a friend about trekking with a group called the Sapa Sisters while in Sapa. Very similar ethos - they are the only women and Hmong led trekking guide group. Such a wonderful experience learning from our wonderful guide about her culture, the region, all while meeting her family and community, getting to share a meal with them, and just experiencing Vietnam through a different set of eyes. Your experience sounds just as fabulous!
So glad you are having a fantastic time. When I visited Peru a few years ago I was blown away by how friendly everyone was & so grateful for the tourism (I went just around the time of their civil unrest & after covid). One of my most favourite holidays 💙🧡❤️💜💚
We heard from so many small businesses and social enterprises that the back-to-back closures/challenges of the pandemic and then the civil unrest were BRUTAL. More people need to start coming back!! It's picking up again, apparently.
When I saw you post about this trip on Insta my immediate reaction was to be nervous about the ethics and how genuine an experience it was, hearing you describe it more in detail has me so excited for you and the women involved! (and apologetic for jumping to a conclusion..) Hopefully these trips are so successful that by the time my daughter is old enough to go on adventures with me they’re no longer needed!

That sounds so amazing, and yes, exactly what we found so special here!
